By order of King Eramad III the Battlecats are hereby ordered to venture into the region of La Marque and slay the legendary Dire Beast. Kelthan and his band of Battlecats are moving toward their pray, when they are ambushed and must battle through an enemy horde.

This is a cool concept in my eyes. A medieval fantasy world where humanoid cats are the dominate species and society. The story itself in this issue is very simple. The king orders the Battlecats to go slay a Dire Beast. This beast has been terrorizing the countryside for years, so the timing of the king’s request is someone suspect. That is the set up. This comic is more action than anything which I thought was cool. No complicated dialog, but hack and slash action. I do think that they could have spent a little bit more time developing the characters. They do develop one character well, but the others are not.

The artwork is great. Since this is such an action heavy story, it’s great that the artwork is good. The images are detailed and colorful. I was able to follow the action very well and every panel was clear. You could always understand what is happening without doing a double take are having to examine the image. Great use of colors and shading, so it was very entertaining to look at.

Overall, I give Battlecats: The Hunt for the Dire Beast Part 1 of 5 7 capes out of 10. I feel it was good quality and action heavy, but lack in development of the characters of the party. Here is to hoping they clear that up as the series progresses.
